Blinkende Binken
Blinkende Binken* is the result of a ten-week long cooperation between four youngsters and as many adult artists. They worked in pairs to find common ground and a shared story. Their artistic search resulted in four short presentations: staged reflections of the unique journey they undertook together.
The four young people who were selected for this project are all connected to youth care. Their ages ranged from 14 to 19, their backgrounds varied wildly. But they all had a story to tell. One was a voice actor who’s deep into Dungeons and Dragons, another a girl who dreamt of becoming a musical star. A fourteen-year old brought a forty-page story that transcended space and time, while another young woman was planning a getaway in a racing car.
Four artists from the region around Turnhout engaged with them in a creative encounter. Those artists too had very different backgrounds and practices: from acting to motion design, from dramaturgy to writing for the stage. Each of the resulting pairs followed their particular path, coached and coordinated by Leen Braspenning.
* In colloquial Flemish, “bink” is a term for a hunk or a tough guy. It is also a nickname for the inhabitants of Turnhout. Blinkende Binken therefore translates roughly into Shining Hunks or Sparkling Studs.
Voice actor Ilya was paired with motion designer and graphic artist Lander. Their cooperation resulted in a video in which Ilya showcased his vocal talents by performing many different roles. Lander complemented Ilya’s fantasy tale with evocative imagery that harkens back to the days of analogue video.
